A week ago Wednesday, T made his live audience drumming debut when he
participated in the kindergarten talent show. In the weeks leading up
to the event, he was really not very sure he wanted to be in the show.
Though he loves drumming, he has never been too sure about playing in
front of any sort of group. We had lots of conversations about
nervousness being a very normal feeling, about sharing the gifts that
God has given us with others, about being brave and courageous...you get
the idea. T's teacher, Mrs. Erb, knew that he was contemplating
drumming for the show, so the day before the forms needed to be turned
in, she talked with him a little bit at school. When a few of the other
kids overheard her, they voiced their excitement over the fact that he
could play drums and expressed how much they would really like to see
him play. This little bit of encouragement from peers was just what T
needed and that day he came home and proudly told us that he was going
to drum in the show. The night before the show, he was in his bed and
was once again expressing his nervousness to play in front of a crowd. I
told him that if it helped him, he should just pretend that there was
no one else in the room but that he was just down in his bedroom jammin'
out like he does nearly every day. He seemed to like that idea. We
prayed that God would give him confidence, courage and peace and that he
would have a lot of fun. Our prayers were answered and when it was his
turn to perform, he hopped right up and did a great job. Though he certainly didn't show all of his "tricks", it was just the boost of confidence he needed to get him over that initial fear of performing for a group.
